ELEX participants will have the exciting opportunity to engage in activities in Washington, D.C. and the greater metropolitan area. As the capital of the United States, Washington, D.C. is a historic city commonly known for being the center of American politics- but it offers so much more!

Museums

D.C. is home to a wide range of world class museums, including many within the Smithsonian institution. Notable for being free of charge to all visitors, the Smithsonian museums offer a unique look into the history, culture, and people of the United States. Examples of museums that participants will have the opportunity of visiting include the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Natural History Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the National Air and Space Museum.

Monuments

Iconic to Washington, D.C., several historic monuments stand throughout the city, most of which are located near the National Mall (the stretch of land between the U.S. Capitol building and the Lincoln Memorial). During their tours of the city, ELEX participants will have the opportunity to view such notable monuments as the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial.

Historic Neighborhoods

Washington, D.C. is rich with culture, and is full of culturally diverse neighborhoods that reflect the wide array of backgrounds and ethnicities that make up the United States population. In neighborhoods like Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill, Anacostia, and Georgetown, visitors will find the unique architecture, tree-lined streets, and vibrant restaurants that contribute to D.C.’s charm.
